What Are Ball Mill Liners?
Ball mill liners (also called mill lining plates) are protective components installed inside the ball mill cylinder to shield the inner wall from the abrasive impact of grinding media and processed materials. As critical ball mill spare parts, they significantly influence grinding efficiency, productivity, and equipment longevity.
By selecting the appropriate liner shape and material, operators can optimize the motion of grinding media (balls or rods), enhancing material breakdown while minimizing energy consumption and wear.
Types Of Ball Mill Liners
The ball mill lining can be categorized in various ways. Based on the installation position, it includes end linings, barrel linings, and grinding door linings. According to the connection method, there are bolt hole linings and non-bolt hole linings. Functionally, it is divided into ordinary linings, plates, and graded linings. By surface shape, it includes stepped linings, convex linings, hemispherical linings, and flat linings. Additionally, ball mill liners can be classified by material type.
Different positions of the ball mill lining serve different purposes. When crushing is the main function, the lining must effectively push the grinding body and exhibit strong impact resistance. In fine grinding, the liner has a weaker pushing effect, lower impact force, and higher grinding efficiency, requiring excellent wear resistance.
- Grading ball mill liner: Optimizes grinding by ensuring large grinding bodies handle coarse particles near the feed end, with progressively smaller grinding bodies towards the discharge end.
- Flat-type ball mill liner: Features a smooth surface, suitable for the fine grinding chamber.
- Layered ball mill liner: Used in the coarse grinding chamber or low-speed ball mills.
- Stepped ball mill liner: More effective than the layered liner, ideal for rough grinding chambers.
- Small corrugated ball mill liner: With small crests and pitches, it suits fine grinding bins and coal grinding.
- End cover ball mill liner: Installed on the grinding head or cylinder end cover to prevent wear.
- Annular groove ball mill lining plate: Designed with an arc-shaped groove, forming an annular groove after installation. Suitable for the first and second chambers of multi-compartment grinding, applicable to both dry and wet ball mills.

Materials of Ball Mill Liner
Common materials for ball mill liners include high manganese steel, chrome steel, hard steel, alloy steel, rubber liners, and magnetic liners.
High manganese steel liners were once widely used due to their toughness and work hardening properties. However, they have drawbacks such as easy deformation, high steel consumption, high cost, and low efficiency. As a result, their market share has been gradually declining.
Currently, the mainstream options are rubber liners and alloy steel liners. Alloy steel liners offer excellent wear and impact resistance. With a well-balanced alloy composition, they exhibit superior physical and chemical properties, achieving a service life more than twice that of high manganese steel.
