The Production Process of Magnesium Ingot

The production of magnesium ingots involves several complex steps:

  1. Raw Material Processing: Dolomite is crushed into fine particles and then calcined at high temperatures to form calcined dolomite.
  2. Compounding and Briquetting: The calcined dolomite is mixed with ferrosilicon powder and fluorite powder and then pressed into briquettes.
  3. Reduction Process: The briquettes are placed in a reduction furnace at high temperatures (1200-1250°C) under vacuum to produce crude magnesium.
  4. Refining and Casting: The crude magnesium undergoes solvent refining, and the final magnesium ingots are cast.

This process ensures high-quality magnesium ingots that meet the needs of various industrial applications.

The Magnesium Ingot Uses

Due to their exceptional properties, magnesium ingots are used in a broad range of industries, including:

  1. Aerospace and Defense: Magnesium ingots serve as lightweight structural materials that help reduce the overall weight of aircraft and military equipment, enhancing fuel efficiency and maneuverability.
  2. Transportation: Magnesium alloys are increasingly used in the automotive industry to replace certain plastic and steel components, especially in engines, steering wheels, and seat bases. Their low density and high strength contribute to significant vehicle weight reduction, improving fuel economy.
  3. 3C Sector (Computers, Home Appliances, Mobile Devices): The aesthetic appearance and excellent mechanical properties of magnesium alloys make them popular among manufacturers of electronic products.
  4. Chemical and Metallurgical Industries: Magnesium ingots are widely used in chemical and metallurgical industries, such as for desulfurization in steel production and as a reducing agent for extracting metals like titanium and uranium. Magnesium ingot can be used in the production of ferro silicon magnesium.
  5. Corrosion Protection: Magnesium ingots are also used as sacrificial anodes to protect underground storage tanks, pipelines, water heaters, and other equipment from corrosion.

Magnesium Alloy Ingots: An Extension of Magnesium Ingots

In addition to pure magnesium, magnesium ingots can be combined with other metals like aluminum to form magnesium alloy ingots. Magnesium alloy ingots share a similar appearance with pure magnesium ingots, but the addition of other elements, such as aluminum, enhances their strength and corrosion resistance. Magnesium alloy ingots are often produced using a mixture of recycled scrap and pure magnesium ingots, effectively reducing production costs. These ingots exhibit superior physical properties, with strong impact resistance and excellent machinability, making them widely used in the automotive and 3C product manufacturing industries.

Magnesium Ingot Advantages

  1. Lightweight: Magnesium ingots have a low density, being only two-thirds the weight of aluminum, making them ideal for applications requiring weight reduction without sacrificing strength.
  2. High Specific Strength: Magnesium ingots offer excellent strength-to-weight ratios, allowing for the creation of strong yet lightweight components, particularly important in the aerospace and automotive industries.
  3. Good Stiffness: The inherent stiffness of magnesium makes it suitable for structural applications, ensuring components maintain their shape under stress.
  4. Excellent Machinability: Magnesium is highly machinable, meaning it can be easily processed and shaped with less wear on tools, leading to reduced production costs and faster manufacturing times.
  5. Shock Absorption: Magnesium’s superior shock absorption properties help reduce vibrations, making it useful in automotive and electronic applications where minimizing impact is crucial.
  6. Corrosion Resistance: With proper alloying and surface treatment, magnesium ingots offer enhanced resistance to corrosion, improving the longevity of products in harsh environments.
  7. Thermal Conductivity: Magnesium has good thermal conductivity, making it suitable for heat dissipation in electronics and other devices that generate heat.
  8. Recyclability: Magnesium ingots are environmentally friendly as they can be recycled easily, contributing to sustainability and reducing material costs in manufacturing.
  9. Good Damping Capacity: The high damping capacity of magnesium reduces noise and vibration, making it ideal for automotive and industrial machinery applications.
  10. Electromagnetic Shielding: Magnesium alloys provide excellent shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI), which is beneficial in electronic and communication devices.
