Ferrovanadium(ferrovanadium alloy) is a ferro alloy used in the steel industry. Its main components are vanadium and iron, with impurities such as sulfur, phosphorus, silicon, and aluminum. FeV is obtained by carbon reduction of vanadium pentoxide in an electric furnace, or by the aluminothermic reduction of vanadium pentoxide in an electric furnace. It is widely used as an element additive in the smelting of vanadium-containing alloy steel and alloy cast iron, as well as in the manufacture of permanent magnets.

Physical Properties of Ferr Vanadium

Vanadium has an atomic mass of 50.9414, with an electron configuration of 3d^3 4s^2. Its melting point is 1902°C, boiling point is 3410°C, and density is 6.1g/cm^3 (20°C). Vanadium is a malleable metal. It forms a continuous solid solution with iron and also forms intermetallic compound phases like α (FeV) within the range of V35% to 55% and at temperatures below 1210°C.

Classification of Ferrovanadium

The vanadium content in ferrovanadium varies according to specific alloy formulations and manufacturing requirements. Generally, the vanadium content in ferrovanadium is typically between 30% and 80%, with iron comprising the remainder.

There are three types of ferrovanadium based on vanadium content: FeV40, FeV60, and FeV80, used as additives in the smelting of alloy steel and low-alloy steel. Vanadium aluminum alloys are used in titanium alloy production, commonly referred to as “VQ” VAl.

Ferrovanadium Product Technology

Vanadium has an abundance in the Earth’s crust of 135×10^-6. There are over 70 types of vanadium minerals, but single vanadium deposits are rare (only the Minaragra deposit in Peru is a single deposit, now depleted), usually associated with other ores. Raw materials used for vanadium production include vanadium-titanium magnetite (containing VO 4% to 1.4%), uranium-vanadium ore (containing V2O5 1.5% to 2.0%), crude ash (containing V2O5 20% to 40%), vanadium-phosphorus iron (containing V3% to 6%), spent vanadium catalysts, residue from alumina production, etc. These raw materials have low vanadium content and require wet metallurgical methods to first extract vanadium pentoxide from them, which is then smelted into ferrovanadium and vanadium additives. Vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrate is the main raw material for vanadium production, with 90% of the world’s vanadium production using this material.

Ferro Vanadium Uses

Ferrovanadium is a versatile alloy used for various purposes including but not limited to

  1. Alloying agent in steelmaking: Used as an alloying agent in steelmaking, ferrovanadium improves the strength, resistance, and welding properties of steel.
  2. Additive for stainless steel and high-strength low-alloy steel: Adding ferrovanadium increases the strength and hardness of stainless steel and other high-strength low-alloy steels, particularly suitable for high-temperature structural applications such as boilers, pressure vessels, and airframes.
  3. Steel for tool and forged parts: Used to produce tool steel, rail steel, and steel for manufacturing forged parts such as crankshafts and ball bearings.
  4. Production of permanent magnets and high-temperature alloys: Used in the production of permanent magnets and high-temperature alloys, these materials have important applications in electronics, aerospace, etc.
  5. Production of vanadium wire and vanadium sheet: Ferrovanadium alloys are used to produce vanadium wire and vanadium sheet, which have various applications in chemicals, electronics, etc.
  6. Applications in spring steel, bearing steel, cast iron, etc.: Ferrovanadium is widely used in the production of spring steel, bearing steel, cast iron, and other materials to meet the needs of different industries.

Ferrovanadium has widespread applications in the steel industry and other fields, improving the properties of steel, enhancing strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance, among other characteristics, to meet various engineering requirements.
