Metal chromium or chrome metal is mainly used in the production of nickel-based and cobalt-based high-temperature alloys, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, resistance alloys, corrosion-resistant alloys, iron-based heat-resistant alloys and stainless steel.
Chromium metal(or Chromium ore)typically contains more than 99.5% chromium. There are two types of industrially produced metal chromium.
- One is aluminothermic chromium, which is in the form of lumps, bright silver, metallic luster, and contains Cr>98%. There are different requirements for impurities depending on the use;
- the other is electrolytic chromium, which is in the form of flakes. , the surface is dark brown, and the surface is bright after hydrogen refining, containing Cr>99%.

Properties of chromium metal
- Corrosion resistance: Metal chromium has good corrosion resistance and can resist erosion by corrosive media such as oxidation, sulfide, and chloride.
- High temperature stability: At high temperatures, metal chromium is not easily oxidized or evaporated, showing good high temperature stability.
- Hardness: Metal chromium has a high hardness and is suitable for use in the manufacture of wear-resistant materials and equipment.
- Electrical conductivity: Metal chromium is also a good electrical conductor and is widely used in electronic components and electrical alloys.

Chromium metal uses
Metal chromium has a wide range of uses, including but not limited to:
- Making stainless steel: Metal chromium is one of the main alloy elements in making stainless steel, ensuring the corrosion resistance and strength of stainless steel.
- Manufacturing alloy steel: Metal chromium can be miscible with other elements to create alloy steel with stronger resistance to high temperatures and corrosion.
- Thermal spraying: Metal chromium can increase the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of metal parts through thermal spraying.
- Aircraft engine manufacturing: Metal chromium is used to manufacture engine parts that are resistant to high temperatures and wear.
- Automobile engine manufacturing: Metal chromium is used to manufacture components such as automobile engine pistons and connecting rods to improve engine performance and stability.
- Other application fields: Metal chromium is also widely used in steel, metallurgy, aerospace, automobiles, chemicals, electronics, national defense and other fields.
In addition, metal chromium is also one of the essential trace elements in the human body and plays an important role in normal growth and development and in regulating blood sugar. However, it should be noted that although metal chromium has a variety of excellent properties, its compounds have certain toxicity, especially hexavalent chromium and its compounds, which may pose risks to health problems such as skin allergies and respiratory diseases.

How To Produce Metal Chromium?
- The conventional technique for smelting metal chromium is the chromium ore process. The principal basic materials for this process are chromite and chromite oxide ore, which are used to create metal chromium. Issues include the challenging smelting process of chromium ore, trouble controlling waste gases, and subpar product quality have progressively come to light.
- Advanced electric arc furnace method
The most popular method for smelting chromium metal at the moment is the sophisticated electric arc furnace technology. Its basic idea is to use an electric arc to react the ferrochromium alloy block with the coke, add it to a molten state, and then evaporate the chromium metal to refine it into a molten ingot. The sophisticated electric arc furnace method has clear benefits over the conventional chromium ore smelting method, including simple operation, environmental friendliness, excellent product quality, full support equipment, etc. - Oxygen furnace method
The oxygen furnace method primarily uses ferrochromium alloy, which is burned in an oxygen atmosphere to simultaneously oxidize chromium to chromium oxide and oxidize iron to generate iron oxide. The oxygen furnace process yields finished chromium with superior quality, but it requires the addition of oxygen to ferrochrome slag that has a high alkaline value when it is molten. The environment will be somewhat impacted by the reaction’s output of ferrochrome slag. - Carbothermal method
Another conventional technique for smelting metal chromium is the carbothermal method. Its basic method involves heating an alloy of ferrochromium and carbon to a high temperature, evaporating the chromium metal, and refining the molten ingots. Due to its significant environmental impact, the carbon thermal technique is no longer appropriate for meeting modern environmental protection standards.
Nowadays, the most common technique for smelting chromium metal is the electric arc furnace method. Whatever approach is chosen, there are benefits and drawbacks to each. The particular approach that should be used should be chosen after taking into account a number of variables, including cost and environmental preservation.
