Silicon carbide or carborundum is a new type of high-efficiency silicon and carburizing alloy material made of high purity carbon powder, metallic silicon powder and low sulfur and low nitrogen carbon materials by special processing technology. Silicon carbide has high density, high purity, does not pollute liquid steel after use, high recovery rate and stable effect, can replace part of ferrosilicon, silicon carbide, carburizer use, reduce the amount of deoxidizer, easy to operate and do not increase equipment, well received by customers. Silicon carbide is also a new type of refractory material.
Types of silicon carbide
Silicon carbide has black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide, black silicon carbide is quartz sand, petroleum coke and high-quality silica as the main raw materials, through the resistance furnace high temperature smelting. Its hardness is between corundum and diamond, mechanical strength is higher than corundum, brittle and sharp. Green silicon carbide is made of petroleum coke and high quality silica as the main raw materials, adding salt as an additive, by high temperature smelting resistance furnace. Its hardness is between corundum and diamond, and its mechanical strength is higher than corundum.
- Black silicon carbide: SiC95%, toughness is higher than green silicon carbide, mostly used for processing low tensile strength materials, such as glass, ceramics, stone, refractory materials, cast iron and non-ferrous metals;
- Green silicon carbide: containing SiC97%, good self-sharpening, mostly used for processing cemented carbide, titanium alloy and optical glass, but also with honing cylinders and fine grinding high-speed steel tools;

Features of silicon carbide
Silicon carbide is a compound material, composed of silicon (Si) and carbon (C), with an extremely high melting point and hardness. Silicon carbide has excellent electrical, thermal, mechanical and chemical properties.
- High temperature resistance: silicon carbide has good high temperature stability and heat resistance, can work stably in a high temperature environment for a long time, and can withstand high temperatures of up to 2700℃.
- High thermal conductivity: silicon carbide has a high thermal conductivity, 3-4 times that of copper, and can effectively dissipate heat.
- Corrosion resistance: silicon carbide has good corrosion resistance and can work stably in acid, alkali, salt and other chemical media.
- High strength: silicon carbide has very high strength and tensile strength, which is more than 5 times that of steel.
- High rigidity: silicon carbide has high rigidity and elastic modulus, which can resist deformation and deformation well.
- Band gap width: the band gap width of silicon carbide is larger than silicon, usually 2.2-3.3 electron volts (eV), while the band gap width of silicon is about 1.1 eV.
- Thermal conductivity: The thermal conductivity of silicon carbide is higher than that of silicon, so the heat dissipation performance of silicon carbide is better.
- Electrical conductivity: silicon carbide has higher electronic mobility than silicon and can respond to external signals faster, so it has a higher switching speed.

Silicon carbide for steelmaking industry
Silicon carbide can be used as a new compound deoxidizer in the process of steelmaking. Compared with the traditional silicon powder carbon deoxidation, silicon carbide has more stable physical and chemical properties, faster deoxidation speed, shorter deoxidation time, can save energy, improve the efficiency of steelmaking, improve the quality of steel, reduce the consumption of raw and auxiliary materials, reduce environmental pollution, and improve the comprehensive economic benefits of electric furnace.
In addition, silicon carbide can also improve the stability of raw materials, reduce the thickness of the mill and the volume of the ball, and increase the mill volume by 15%-30%. In the casting and steelmaking industry, silicon carbide can increase the temperature in the furnace, extend the melting time, increase steel production, and play a role in carburizing, deoxidation, silicon addition, and heating. At the same time, silicon carbide can also be used as a substitute for iron silicon, reduce dust pollution, reduce costs, is a new way of steelmaking.
What are the advantages of silicon carbide compared with traditional deoxidizers
- Good stability: silicon carbide deoxidizer is more stable in physical and chemical properties than traditional silicon powder and toner.
- Good deoxidation effect: silicon carbide deoxidation speed is fast, slag formation is early, reduction atmosphere is thick, foam is very rich, can well reduce the oxygen content in steel, to achieve the purpose of liquid steel deoxidation.
- Improve the absorption rate of elements: silicon carbide can also effectively improve the absorption rate of elements.
- Reduce cost: silicon carbide can replace the more expensive traditional deoxidizer ferrosilicon powder and gold powder to reduce the cost of steelmaking.
- Improve the quality of steel: The use of silicon carbide deoxidizer can improve the quality of steel, make the quality of molten steel stable, refine the grain, remove harmful impurities in molten steel.
- Environmental protection: The use of silicon carbide can reduce environmental pollution.
